Free Watermelon (and how best to cut it)!

June 2, 2019

Watermelon is probably associated with summer more than just about any other fruit. It originated in West Africa, but by the 7th century it was in India, and a few hundred years later it was popular in China. In the 1500s, Spanish settlers were growing it in Florida, and pretty soon it found its way as far north as Massachusetts. Growing from a vine in the summertime makes a watermelon a seasonal favorite. Cutting a watermelon can be an unforgiving job, but a post on Pinterest has made it easier than ever. Watermelon Sticks make this fantastic fruit easy to handle and beautiful to display. Here’s all you do: 1. Cut the watermelon in half horizontally. 2. Place one half on a cutting board, flesh down. 3. Cut slices downward 1-2" wide. 4. Rotate the cutting board and cut slices downward and perpendicular to the other slices. 5. Repeat with the other watermelon half Serving these on platters, plates, cutting boards or even in a jar make this an elegant way to serve summer’s favorite treat! This week at Fresh Madison Market, you can pick up a fresh watermelon absolutely free with your $20 purchase. Enjoy!
