What Makes Comfort Food so Comfortable?
While there’s no agreed list of “comfort foods,” you know them when you have them. They are the ones that make you smile, drop your stress, or give you warmth. It could be a beef stew or a pan of brownies. What do they have in common? It’s simple: Calories. According to the American Psychological Association, 38% of adults have over eaten or had something “unhealthy” because of stress. We are looking for that little hit of dopamine, the happy chemical in our brains. According to NBCNews, in times of stress we love our pizza, chocolate and grilled cheese. Sometimes we get comfort from foods that evoke happy memories from childhood. Just about any food can be a comfort food, especially if there’s a comforting emotion already connected to it. Like anything, don’t overdo it… but, don’t neglect some simple happiness from your meals either.
